Finding inspiration and ideas for my next writing project is an ongoing treasure hunt. I’m always on the look out for my next great story line, something that has never been written before. Perhaps a plot twist or some new, hidden, pocket of every day life that hasn’t been over-explored, the trail trampled underfoot by explorers who have come before. The pursuit of that next great idea is never far from my consciousness.
But, the truth of the matter is, even if I found it, I probably wouldn’t know what to do with it. I’m learning that the value of the story is in the telling. How well can I tell this story should be a question that I attach to every novel idea. My voice and perspective, the way I unfold the story and its characters are where the story lies. Think of your favorite story. What captured your attention? Why have you read it a thousand times, even though you know how it will end? Chances are, you love the story because you fell in love with the characters and want to join them on their journey. It doesn’t have to be an epic tale to return the ring, battle a dragon, or discover a hidden realm to another world. It can be, but it doesn’t have to be.
So, how can I tell a story well? Write about what I know! For me, a daughter, mother, wife, widow, soccer coach, teacher, and friend, I have a treasure trove of experiences to draw from. Considering all the people I know, places I’ve been, heartaches I’ve lived through, surely I can find a story in there some where. Maybe I’ll write about characters I know, in places I’ve been, doing things I’ve only dreamt of. I don’t have to recreate the wheel, but start from a place of knowledge and let my imagination soar.
What do you know? What jobs have you held? What heart aches have you endured? Challenges you’ve conquered? What is your greatest fear? If you’ve lived a life, you have the material for the next great novel right inside yourself. Breathe new life into the ordinary. There are a million great stories to tell in the world right outside your front door.
When you write about things you know, you’ll probably find that the pages come easier, pulled from your memories and experiences, and that your characters write themselves. Now you’re on your way to creating memorable characters and situations. For me, that’s the next great soccer book or high school romp. Or perhaps, a tale of survival from a less than ideal childhood or a failed marriage. My life has enough material to keep me busy for a while!
Now, go find your story within yourself!
